Description

Our NZSL courses are designed to empower learners with essential communication skills and cultural understanding. 

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Exchange personal information confidently and share life events, including their experiences with language learning.

  • Describe and provide information about others, enhancing social interactions.

  • Discuss extended family/whānau and explore family origins.

  • Talk about activities, food, and things around the house, enriching everyday conversations.

  • Engage in discussions about home life and housework, fostering practical communication.

  • Share personal experiences related to mishaps at home, promoting relatability and understanding.

  • Extend their knowledge of NZSL grammatical structures, improving their signing skills.

  • Develop a deeper awareness of the cultural context for using NZSL with Deaf people, fostering respectful and inclusive communication.

Additionally, learners will gain the ability to:

  • Exchange greetings and make introductions while understanding simple class instructions.

  • Understand the importance of facial expressions in NZSL and gain insights into Deaf culture.

  • Use eye gaze effectively and master numbers 1-10 and the fingerspelling alphabet.

  • Name common food and drink items, make and respond to requests, and express likes and dislikes.

  • Communicate effectively in classroom settings, follow instructions, and navigate basic needs and emergency procedures.
